Ever since I read “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” I loved first lines. There’s nothing better than a succinct, attention-grabbing line that sets the tone for the whole story. Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order:
“It was night again. The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts.” Patrick Rothfus - Name of the Wind
"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." Steven King - The Gunslinger
“It was a pleasure to burn.” Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451
“There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife.” Neil Gaiman - The Graveyard Book
These simple sentences pave the way for truly incredible stories and it was my goal to create one just as good. Ambitious right?
